Kudos to Ralph! Thanks to Dennis Bono who told me about inexpensive battery powered chain saws, I went down Penny Creek today and cut 6 feet off from that tree that caused us problems in boats longer than 12 feet. You still need to line your boat up and go at an angle towards the new cut, but there is no maneuvering around that top log any more. 6 feet of it went floating down Penny Creek this morning. Please note: there is an underwater log that extends toward the new cut, but the new cut gives you access to the end of the underwater log.
The water was over 6 feet deep where I made the cut, so I was not standing in the water with my chainsaw. I just let my boat pushed against the log by the tide and cut it from my boat.
